The printed Bible and its Reformation

This article provides a brief view of the history of printing the Bible in German and English just before the Reformation. By contrasting the situation in the Germanic Holy Roman Empire and in early 16th-century England, the article brings out the fact that, in spite of the similarity of the texts on a linguistic level, the English Bible and its German counterpart were to have quite different fates during the first period of the Reformation for historical, political and personal reasons.
