Theology between phenomenological urgency and hermeneutical endurance

This article aims at reacting to the challenge laid down to theologians by the philosopher Jean-Luc Marion: “Why do they not, or so little, endeavour … to read phenomenologically the events of Revelation contained in Scripture … instead of always favouring ontic, historical or semiotic hermeneutics?” “Saving the phenomena” by recognizing their right to appear without reservation, contrary to the indisputable privilege attributed to the process of objectivation – this is the radical turning point proposed by Marion. Faith provides access to given realities, the reception of which requires setting aside, on the part of the witness, the prior censure that bars them from appearing. This perspective, which is a priori sympathetic to theologians, also raises questions for them, notably concerning the fundamental passivity to which the phenomenon appears to relegate the witness it submerges.
