P. HÜNERMANN – Quo Vadis ? Au sujet de l’importance du Concile Vatican II pour l’Église, l’oecuménisme et la société aujourd’hui

Cinquante ans après le début de Vatican II , la discussion intellectuelle au sujet du concile et de ses textes perdure, dans une grande diversité des approches et, avant tout, un débat contradictoire quant à son évaluation fondamentale et son importance. Dans ce cadre, se pose la question de l’évaluation des affirmations du concile Vatican II sous l’angle de lavérité enseignée et du caractère obligatoire des documents qu’il a produits. L’auteur de cet article, partie prenante du grand commentaire de Herder, a posé la question du statut du discours que portent les textes du concile. Le cinquième volume du commentaire propose ainsi une clé, en définissant le corpus des textes de Vatican II comme un « texte constitutionnel de la foi ». En tant que tel, il a un caractère magistériel obligatoire, mais reste aussi fondamentalement ouvert, tributaire de sa traduction concrète dans la praxis croyante du peuple de Dieu, de la gouvernance ecclésiale, du travail théologico-canonique, et de la formulation des règles.

Fifty years after the beginning of Vatican II, intellectual discussion of the council and its texts continues apace, with a great diversity of approaches and, most especially a debate about its fundamental evaluation and its importance. Within this framework, the question of how to evaluate the Vatican II statements in light of taught truth and the obligatory character of the documents that it produced. The author of the present article, a participant in the great Herder commentary, has asked the question of the status of the discourse contained in the conciliar texts. The fifth volume of this commentary proposes a key, by defining the Vati can II corpus as a “constitutional text of faith”. As such, it possesses an obligatorily magisterial character, but also remains fundamentally open, dependent upon its concrete implementation in the believing praxis of God’s people, of ecclesial governance, of theologico-canonic work and of the formulation of rules.
