World War I and the thrown in crisis of German and French Protestant theology

In German-language Protestant theology, World War I brought about a radical questioning of theological positions that had been heretofore dominant. Voices such as the young Karl Barth’s were raised against the patriotic theology proposed at the
beginning of the war by the greatest theological figures of the time (Adolf Harnack, Wilhelm Herrmann and Ernst Troeltsch). Like Rudolf Bultmann, a number of
German theologians at first blinded by the patriotic momentum of the first months of the war then questioned some overly hasty associations between the destiny of their country and divine providence.
