À mesure que la chrétienté occidentale prit conscience de son unité qui reposait fondamentalement sur l’appartenance à l’Église romaine et à la culture latine, elle eut tendance à considérer avec une méfiance croissante ceux qui ne partageaient pas ses croyances et qui utilisaient pour leurs cultes des langues incompréhensibles pour elle comme l’hébreu et l’arabe. Mais, parmi ces derniers, il convient de distinguer entre les minorités religieuses qui vivaient au sein du monde chrétien et les peuples du dehors. Dans le premier cas, il s’agissait essentiellement des juifs, qui bénéficiaient d’un statut particulier ; dans le second, des musulmans et des païens qui constituaient une menace pour l’Occident. De multiples contacts cependant eurent lieu au cours de ces cinq siècles, non sans soubresauts, contresens et polémiques.

As Occidental Christianity became aware of its unity as based fundamentally on belonging to the Roman Church and Latin culture, it tended to regard with a growing wariness those who did not share its beliefs and who used languages such as Hebrew and Arabic for their worship which were not comprehensible to Occidentals. However, among the latter, we must distinguish between religious minorities who lived within the Christian world and peoples outside it. In the first case, this essentially concerned Jews, who had a special status. In the second, it concerned Moslems and pagans who represented a threat to the Occident. Nonetheless, there were many contacts over these five centuries, not without ups and downs, misunderstandings and disputes.
