Redemption, eschatology and sublimation : elements for a theory of Christianity. Ernst Troeltsch and Max Weber

Modernity tolls the bell for theology as a rational foundation of Christianity. The program of a theory of Christianity developed by Troeltsch looks to formulate a functional equivalent to classical dogma, capable of reflecting the role of Christianity in the culture of modernity. This theory of Christianity is elaborated around a theory of religion. The author first evokes the reflexive conditions of such a theory, and especially the essential heuristic role, returning to the crisis situation in which modern Christianity finds itself That is the starting point of the reflections that Troeltsch and Weber consecrate to this problem. The discovery of the eschatological character of primitive Christianity plays a decisive role here : it is the origin of their common reflections on the tension between religion of redemption and world. These reflections open the problem of strategies of rationalization allowing a regulation of this tension; developed by Troeltsch from the example of Christianity, this problematic finds itself at the center of the essays that Weber consecrates to « The economic ethic of universal religions « . The author concludes with a systematic resumption of the problems that a theory of religion presents, seeking to understand the role that Christianity plays in the modern world.
