Without doubt, Jürgen Moltmann is among the most important Protestant theologians of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. This article endeavours to understand how his work fits into the landscape of Protestant theology of his time, by examining the debates and discussions he engaged in over his lifetime with dialectical theologians who preceded him, but also with contemporary thinkers and not necessarily theologians (as Paul Ricoeur, who was reading Moltmann mainly in the 1960s in connection with the Théologie de l’Espérance). Jürgen Moltmann was a man of dialogue with various theological, philosophical and scientific currents all of which enriched his thinking in the course of his long theological work.
