Théologico-politique : réflexions sur l’histoire récente d’un encombrant
Le « retour de Dieu » dans un monde incertain (1975-2026)

Les deux dernières décennies du XXe siècle ont vu un retour de légitimité de Dieu en politique, dans un contexte marqué par la multiplication de conflits localisés où l’appartenance religieuse pouvait servir de ressort. En philosophie et dans les sciences sociales, ce « retour de Dieu » a rendu son actualité au débat sur le « théologico-politique ». Complémentaires, ces deux événements sont au centre de l’article qui en raconte l’histoire récente, entre globalisation du monde et sécularisation, puis entre violence au nom de Dieu et montée de radicalismes chrétiens. L’analyse conduit à s’interroger sur l’efficacité heuristique de la notion de « théologico-politique » pour comprendre la crise actuelle de l’idée démocratique.
The last two decades of the 20th century witnessed a return of the legitimacy of God in the political sphere within a context marked by multiple localised conflicts in which religious allegiance was central. In philosophy and the social sciences, this ‘return of God’ re-enlivened the debate on the ‘theologico-political’. These two events are both complementary and at the centre of this article laying out their recent history between globalisation of the world and secularisation, then between violence in the name of God and the rise of Christian radicalisms. The analysis leads to questioning the heuristic efficacity of the notion of the ‘theologico-political’ in understanding the current crisis of the concept of democracy.
